Come September 22, 2012 I would've spent 5 years working in the Information Technology (IT) industry. Spent is the operative word here because that's what I have done -Spend (Millions of others continue to do so and few realize it). I can't honestly say that I 'invested' 5 years of my life in my work because that would be a big fat lie. I think I can speak for the entire industry when I say that a majority of us are pampered (and treated like shit at the same time), overpaid, passionless and disillusioned. Although I must admit that I had a great degree of freedom to choose to
work on some really cool & interesting stuff. I can only imagine how
brain-dead some of my colleagues at my former workplace would feel if
they thought out of the box.
I don't want to become another IT guy who first buys a bike, then a car, a house in one of the condos outside the city (where I won't even know who my neighbour is), for whom an outing means a day at the mall, blows away money on weekends, takes kids to the mall food court (I cringe when I see kids 2-3 years old munching away on a Mac!), who has crappy taste in music limited to the latest crappy movie song, is ready to bite anyone's head off to get to the top and finally drift through life without experiencing anything real, worthwhile or wholesome.
I don't remember how & when I developed a passion for travel. Was it Ian Wright? Megan McCormick? I don't really know but I'm grateful for it. But I do have my family and a terrific group of friends to thank for sharing the joy of travelling with me. And what I do know is that it has opened frontiers for me that I previously thought were impossible. I can honestly say that I have learned more from a day on the road than within the four walls of a classroom for two decades.
So, all the aforementioned factors (and a few more which I won't discuss) have encouraged the usually risk-averse 'yours truly' to take a break starting end of 2012. No, it has nothing to with the end of the world. My greatest dream is to travel around the world without a care and throw my arms around Mother nature in honest rapture. And throw my arms, I will. I intend to honour this dream of mine, if not completely, at least to the maximum extent possible. This blog will serve as a chronicle as I work to achieve my dream. So, what are we waiting for? Let's go see the world!
